Can I use plumbing solder and flux on steel, zinc plated, etc?
I bought a soldering kit with a propane torch and some solder and flux for plumbing use. I want to drill holes in a piece of steel and put nails in the holes. Then I want to solder the nail to the steel. Will this be strong...like could you break it with 100 lb force? The nails are huge zinc plated 10 inch nails. I am using nails because I couldn't find screws this large. I may also put a nut on the nail and solder it to the piece of steel and the nail to help hold the whole thing. How strong is soldering?
You might be able to get the stuff to stick together for awhile, but all of the above is not such a good idea. The first issue is that applying heat to the zinc coated parts is an inhalation hazard. A better idea is to go to the home center and buy some threaded rod, cut it to length and put nuts on both sides of the piece of steel and this will give you the screws you wanted.
Soldering the way you are thinking is not very strong even if you can get the solder to stick
