My 530i has no hex or allen nut. It's a 4" cap. How do I remove it? What direction do I turn it to remove?
I have a 2006 BMW 530i the engine oil housing is on the front of the engine. It has no hex or allen nut. I tried to remove it with a strap wrench, but it won't budge. What direction thread is on the cap? Is there a special removal tool?
Turn it counter-clockwise to remove it. It is way too tight if you can't turn it with a strap wrench. It should only be tightened hand tight. The earlier bimmers have a 36 mm nut on the filter cap for cap removal but the newer models need the V410 (86.50 mm) oil filter wrench for cap removal. Although a strap wrench should do just as well. Anyway, removal is counter-clockwise. Don't forget to replace the oil filter cap o-ring seal, and don't over tighten the filter cap or the o-ring seal can squish out and leak. Hand tight only!
The special removal tool is the V410 oil filter wrench but there is really no reason why a strap wrench can't be used.
