Using Permanent Magnet Motors In Variable Speed Appliances
In the modern era, domestic appliances are mostly driven by electric motors. Whether you are running hand mixers in the kitchen or a lawn mower out back, they are powered by a motor. And chances are these days that that motor is electric.
There are three types of electric motor. Universal brush motors have high torque and variable speed; you'll find them in drills and washing machines. Induction motors are silent, safe and reliable. They are found in refrigerators and pumps. New motors coming on the market, on the other hand, try to combine the best of both these worlds. These new motors are very exciting because they combine the high torque of brush motors with the silent durability of brushless.
We are familiar with the presence of micro controllers in control panels, like the dashboard of our car. We are now starting to see them in the motors that these panels control, as well. As we find it more and more important to work within the ecology of the planet, it becomes increasingly important that our motors are efficient, quiet and simple. The new electric motors provide all of that.
Whether you are running a food processor or a Poulan chainsaw, variable speed is what you need for optimum efficiency. Speed control can boost efficiency, in some cases by as much as 30 percent. These smaller motors also allow manufacturers to charge less for their products.
For washing machines, an induction motor won't work very well because the controllers are too expensive. But new magnet technology is offering alternatives such as the permanent-magnet synchronous motor with sensorless controls and semiconductor technology. These new motors run at lower speeds and save energy. They run at cooler temperatures and are very quiet, creating less waste heat and noise that needs to be abated.
It is easy to see why permanent magnet motors are gaining in popularity. They also use less raw materials. Less copper and steel mean lower cost and lower costs mean lower prices. Not only is the market price not as influenced by the price of commodities, but as their popularity grows, these motors will get less and less expensive. They are already used to vibrate cell phones and power cars.
We may not see these motors in every application; the Homelite chainsaw with a permanent magnet may not come around any time soon. But look for this innovative motor in appliances like washing machines and refrigerators. With the high torque of a traditional universal variable-speed motor and the quiet, dependable strength of the stator-driven induction motor, these workhorses are going to be an important part of our electric future.
can you add magnets to a gyroscope and make a motor?
how many magnets will be needed, how will you start it,will there be friction, would it have to be upright, who could do this, what purpose would it be used for,if possible, how would it work, would it work in outer space the same as it would on earth,if so, how many r-p -m's would it do?
Commercial or industrial gyroscopes all ready have a motor connected to them. That is how they keep spinning. I don't see any purpose in trying to make the gyroscope a motor in its self.
