Octagon shaped ring versus a round fighting ring? do corners in octagon contribute to more defensive, boring?
fights that go the distance? Makes sense when you think about it and would explain why the ufc fights are so freaking boring compared to strikeforce fights in a round ring where there are less than 50 percent of fights going to decision. What i want you to answer is does that stupid shape with 8 points and 16 corners contribute to the ufc's crappy product? corners equal decisions and clinches. right?
"corners equal decisions and clinches. right?"
No. Clinches occur against the "wall". It's hard to "trap" someone in the corner of an octagon since it's such a big angle. And at any rate, most refs are pretty quick to break up clinches. It's not an issue.
"... would explain why the ufc fights are so freaking boring compared to strikeforce fights in a round ring where there are less than 50 percent of fights going to decision."
This is purely subjective, but for every "boring" fight from the UFC you name, I can name three exciting ones. Was Sanchez-Kampmann boring? How about any of the GSP vs. Hughes fights? Penn vs. Sherk, Lesnar vs. Mir 1&2, Shogun vs. Liddell, Liddell vs. Ortiz 1&2, Sanchez vs. Parisyan, Fisher vs. Stout 1&2, Stevenson vs. G-Sot, Wanderlei vs. anyone... Meanwhile, Strikeforce has its own share of boring fights, like Aoki vs. Melendez, Lawal vs. Mousasi, and Henderson vs. Shields.
It has far less to do with the shape of the cage (8 sides make the UFC's octagon nearly circular anyway) and more to do with the fighters. First, the UFC has a lot more parity in the level of talent compared to Strikeforce. Don't get me wrong, the top guys in Strikeforce are true world-class fighters, but their cards are padded with guys who are pretty green and have big holes in their game. By the time most guys get to the UFC, they're simply a better quality of fighter and have plugged up most of the holes. Your average UFC fighter is more skilled in more areas than your average Strikeforce fighter. If your Strikeforce guy hasn't developed his punch defense well, he'll leave more openings for a knockout; if he's only done four months of BJJ, he'll be easier to submit. There are probably more BJJ black belts or NCAA All-American wrestlers in any one UFC weight class compared to the entire Strikeforce roster.
Further, styles make fights. Wrestling-centric fighters like GSP, Couture, and Shields (when he was in SF) are more likely to work a stiffling ground or clinch game than a striking-heavy fighter like Cung Le, Melvin Manhoef, or Robbie Lawler. But there's a reason guys like Lawler and Scott Smith USED to fight for the UFC, but don't anymore. They're one-dimensional. As much as I respect Smith for his heart and fighting spirit, he gets a train run on him all day when he faces a guy who wants to take him down. If he faced Shields, it would be a boring fight, regardless of what organization they were in.
Perry: ‘This Ain’t a Day for Quitting Nothing’ (Truthdig)
So he “stepped in it” during Wednesday night’s GOP presidential debate. Others
might say he choked or even ate it. But despite Rick Perry’s Texas-sized
blunder, he’s not giving up his White House dreams. BBC: Mr Perry fluffed his
lines, finding himself unable to name all three federal departments he would
eliminate if he became president—one of his key policies. ... In the “spin
room” after the debate, Mr Perry told a crowd of journalists: “I’m glad I had
my boots on because I really stepped in it tonight.” Mr Perry did the round of
early morning talk shows on Thursday in an effort to stem any fallout from the
incident. “There were so many federal agencies that come to mind, that I want
to get rid of, that the Energy Department would not come out,” he said in an
interview for ABC’s Good Morning America. His campaign sent an email out to
his supporters asking them, “what part of the Federal Government would you
like to forget about the most?” His website now asks supporters to vote for
one. Read more
