Kodak is a virtual late-comer to the ink jet printer market. Of late, though, the company has debuted a trio of all-in-one photo printers. Here are some facts about one of the three, the Kodak EasyShare 5300.

The Kodak EasyShare 5300 is about 19 inches in width, about 15 inches deep and in the vicinity of 9 inches tall. It weighs nearly 21 pounds. The flatbed scanner holds originals measuring up to size A4 and the hinges allow for bulky originals, such as books. It boasts two memory card slots as well as two USB ports. The paper cassette holds up to 100 sheets of regular paper. The tray for photo paper acknowledges only the 4" x 6" size, but still holds up to 20 sheets. The output tray has an extender that accepts paper up to 14" long. Although this printer is not suited for double-sided printing as shipped, Kodak can offer an add-on duplexer.
Additional Functions of the EasyShare 5300
Highlighting an easy to use menu, the control panel has a 3" LCD screen that swivels to allow for best viewing. The control panel includes buttons that let the user to pick the desired function (copy, print, scan). Also included are buttons associated with photo printing, including zoom and rotate. The printer allows for printing a proofsheet and file transfers between cards or storage media plugged into the printer and the computer. Kodak maintains that the printer uses less ink than different brands. The printer comes in four ink colours plus black for non-photo text printing. In addition, there’s a clear coating that's used on all photos as protection. To keep the price tag on ink cartridges low, the print head is found on the printer as opposed to the cartridge. A page of black text costs roughly .03 US per page and a page of colour text costs approximately .07 US.

The EasyShare 5300 allows for photo printing without a PC by using a memory card, storage device or PictBridge camera. In regards to a memory card or storage device, it's rather easy to slot in the media and choose the preferred images to print. The printer also allows you to pick the number of prints, select the layout and decide on colour or black and white prints. Print quality is another choice, with draft, normal and best serving as the existing modalities. A convenient feature is the facility to make an index print that serves as a reference for a specific batch of photos. The index print incorporates the file names and index numbers of the images. Another item is the proof sheet, which serves as a scannable document on which the user picks both what photos to print as well as the layout. Lastly, the user can transmit files from a memory card or flash drive placed into the printer directly to the computer.
