AR15 Pistol Caliber Uppers

The winter imposes difficulties on those in the Northern states wanting to practice outdoors. You can get a .22 upper or complete rifle which can provide a good substitute in most respects, but it lacks realistic recoil. One alternative opted for by many police departments is the 9 mm AR for indoor winter training. The 9mm round doesn't make the high intensity noise that the .223 does, nor does it chew up back stops as badly. The Rock River Arms 9mm AR upper is chambered for the popular and inexpensive 9X19mm cartridge. The RRA 9mm upper will function with unmodified Uzi magazines, but hold-open requires the use of RRA's own magazines. The barrel is a 16" A1 profile unit that has a different thread pitch to stop you screwing a .223 muzzle device on. This unit is available in A2 and A4 formats. The A2 has an adjustable A2 sight set up for 9mm ammo. . Both versions feature an A2 front sight tower.

Also useable on some indoor ranges (check first) is the AR57 upper. The very different magazine changes preclude this from being a viable AR trainer, however. This monolithic quad rail upper has its magazine laying horizontal on top of the barrel. Unusually this upper ejects downward through the AR's magazine well, making post shoot clear ups easy. The 5.7X28 is as flat shooting as pistol cartridges get and a viable option for small game and defensive use. The AR57 upper comes with a 16" standard profile, free-floating barrel with a unique flash suppressor. There are nearly three feet of Picatinny rail for accessory and optics mounting. The AR57 magazine is a 50 round polymer mag in a translucent smoke color. Sights are not provided, but you can easily bolt of any of several dozen BUIS marketed today.
