I am doing a diy replacement of the cv joint on the Drive shaft and have noticed that instead of the usual nut and cotter pin there is a wierd type of steel nut with flange and the flange is notched into a groove in the spindle thread.

My question is, what size nut is it and how do I remove it? I have tried levering the notch up with a hammer and screwdriver but it is solid. maybe its a cover over a nut underneath? is so how can I remove the cover?

That's the design of the most newer models of Toyota cars.

You need to use punch to knock the notch up. Toyota have a special punch for that purpose. But I am sure you can do with other punches. Just hit it hard and the notch should be up. Don't be afraid to damage it. It is only a nut. I don't think you can make it with a screw driver.

After you have punched the notch up, use a powerful 1/2 inch airgun to loose the nut. You can also use a breaker bar with your own power to accomplish it. When you have placed the drive shaft, check if the threads of the nut are still good; if not turning in freely in the first few turns, re-tap the threads or buy a new nut at a Toyota dealer. After you tightened the nut, punch down the notch.

The nut in your car should be 30mm, 12point, if I remember correctly. Camry's should be 32mm, 12 point.
