I'd like to repair a 3/8-16 threaded hole in cast iron. Best method? Or should I use a threaded insert? How?
Do you need a special tap for cast iron? A special drill? What could I use to adhere a piece of steel inside the bad hole and redrill and tap the steel? If that's possible, I would drill existing hole a little bigger for the steel. Can any of this be done?
By the way, the hole is only about 1/4" deep and open at the bottom - in other words, it's a through-hole. To my knowledge, there are no 1/4 inch long 3/8-16 Helicoils. Can't cut it, right. A threaded insert might work if I can cut one to 1/4" and tight-fit it in? Could it be "glued" in place? (The bolt that goes into the hole is just to tighten a clamp in place, no real great pull tension.
After reading some of the answers, I must tell you that the bolt is a specialized bolt that must remain 3/8-16 thread. This fixture is on an old wood jointer, and the bolt configuration is made to tighten down on the piece that is stripped, to lock the jointer fence in position.
I think your best bet is to drill and tap for a solid insert and use the best grade thread locker (such as loctite). Helicoil is problematic as it isn't designed for this type of application.
